What you are really paying for at the nail salon
A US gel manicure averages $45–$65 before tip, and most salons bill soak-off removal as a separate $10–$15 line unless you are getting a new set the same day. Acrylic sets look cheaper on the menu than they are in practice, because fills every two to three weeks are effectively a subscription.
Prices swing hard by region. Expect roughly 20–25% below the national average in small-town and suburban salons, 25% above it in Chicago, Dallas or Atlanta, and up to 50% above in Manhattan, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Boston. Add local sales tax and a customary 18–20% tip and the real number is usually a third higher than the price on the wall.
None of that means salons are a rip-off — a skilled tech protecting your nail plate is worth paying for. It means you should know the annual figure before you commit to a service that also needs filing off every three weeks.
