Why do my nails peel in layers?
Peeling in sheets is almost always water damage plus mechanical stress: repeated wetting and drying separates the layers of the nail plate, and clippers or metal files then split them further. Switch to gloves for dishes, file in one direction with a 240-grit file, and oil the plate itself nightly. Expect visible improvement only in new growth — the peeling part cannot be repaired.
Can I use cuticle oil over polish?
Yes, and you should. Oil on top of polish does not lift it; it keeps the cuticle and the free edge flexible, which is what stops chipping at the tip. The only exception is right before applying a base coat — the nail must be clean and oil-free for that.
How long should I wait between gel manicures?
If the removal was done properly — soaked off, never scraped — you do not strictly need a break. What you need is one bare-nail week if the plate looks white, thin or bendy. Two to three days of oil and a protein base coat fixes surface dehydration; real thinning needs a full growth cycle.
Is biotin worth taking for nails?
Only if you are actually deficient. Studies showing real benefit were mostly in people with brittle nail syndrome or low levels. If your diet has enough protein, iron and B vitamins, extra biotin will not outperform simply stopping the mechanical damage. It can also skew thyroid blood tests, so tell your doctor if you take it.
Why are my nails yellow after dark polish?
Pigment staining, not damage. Dark reds and blues bind to the keratin surface when applied without a base coat. It grows out in weeks; you can speed it up with a buffing pass and a whitening soak. Always use a clear base coat under saturated colours.
What nail shape is strongest for short nails?
A soft square or squoval. Straight sidewalls keep the stress points supported, while almond and stiletto shapes remove side material and concentrate force at a narrow tip — beautiful, but far more likely to snap on short natural nails.
Do nails need to breathe?
No — the nail plate is dead keratin with no blood supply and it does not respire. What people notice as “needing to breathe” is dehydration from removal and filing. The fix is oil and gentler removal, not time without polish.
Why does one nail grow slower than the others?
Growth rate follows use and blood flow: the middle finger is usually fastest, the thumb and pinky slowest, and the dominant hand outpaces the other. A single nail that slows down suddenly, thickens or changes colour is different — that needs a dermatologist.

We read every question. Anything asked more than three times becomes a full guide, and anything that needs a doctor gets sent back with that answer — we do not diagnose nails over the internet.
Questions are answered against our published methodology, and answers include the reasoning, not just the verdict, so you can judge whether it applies to your nails.
