How fast should nails grow — and what the numbers mean

Healthy fingernails grow roughly 3 to 3.5 mm per month, or about 0.1 mm a day. Toenails move far slower, near 1 mm a month. That means a nail you damage today takes four to six months to fully replace itself, and a toenail can take a year or more.

Growth is faster in summer than winter, faster on your dominant hand, and faster on the middle finger than the thumb or pinky. In dry US winter climates — think Denver, Chicago or Minneapolis — indoor heating pulls moisture out of the nail plate, so the free edge often peels before it gains length. Humid regions such as Florida or the Gulf Coast usually see fewer splits but more lifting after gel manicures.

Measure the same finger each week, always from the smile line to the tip, and log it here. Two or three weeks of data will show you whether your routine is actually working or whether breakage is quietly cancelling out your growth.
