The order that makes a nail routine work

Almost every failed nail routine fails for the same reason: the steps are done in the wrong order or at the wrong moment. Oil goes on after water, never before, because the point is to seal moisture in. Filing happens on dry nails — a soaked plate is swollen and tears instead of cutting cleanly. Strengthening base coats belong on bare, oil-free nails, so they cannot be done in the same five minutes as your oil.

A realistic week looks like this: oil every night, cream and SPF every morning, filing and cuticle care once a week on a dry evening, a mask once a week, and a protein treatment twice a week. Twelve weeks is the right planning horizon because that is roughly one full fingernail growth cycle — shorter than that and you are judging a routine on nail you grew before you started.

The calendar file adds a 15-minute reminder to each step and repeats it until your plan ends, so nothing relies on motivation.
